Match Report
Light of Africa has been poised to notch their first points of the season for weeks now, playing teams close in tough losses. They got their chance to come out on the winning side - and capitalized - this week against Westside. Light of Africa's main striker notched a hat trick in the first 40 minutes of the match, and sealed their first victory. The first goal 25 minutes into the match, on a counter-attack, when Light of Africa caught the Westside defense on their heels and fired far-side across the goal face. Then they followed that up with another counter 10 minutes later to the same effect. The third goal was just plain excellent soccer, dodging 2 Westside defenders to notch a cliff-hanger of a shot across the goal face and just catching the post and in. For Light of Africa this game was a turning point for their frustrating season, where they were previously playing well, but didn't seem to have quite enough firepower, missing that one little thing to get it done. The talent has always been there but perhaps not always the organization. On Sunday, Light of Africa put talent and organization together. For Westside this game summed up their entire season - Light of Africa had 5 shots on goal in the first half and scored 3. Westside had more than 15 shots on goal in the first half, but couldn't convert one. They controlled the pace and the tempo, ruled the field, but couldn't stop the counter attack. They dominated late in the game, but only when a comeback was tricky, at best. Westside scored with 15 remaining in the game - Rob Ducey gave a great feed to Mike Grabast. With less than two minutes in the match, Grabast scored a second, but Westside couldn't complete the surge. LOA: 3 Westside: 2

Match Report
This was a better match than the final score indicated. Westside played short-handed, missing key players due to injuries and suspension. IPS/Marathon Taverna was also missing key striker Brett Gardner, the league's second leading scorer. Westside was able to match IPS/Marathon Taverna stride for stride until a missed tackle left Jan Komarcia open to start the scoring. A second defensive breakdown sent IPS/Marathon Taverna into half-time with a 2:0 lead. IPS/Marathon Taverna's speed and a short Westside bench began to take its toll on Westside in the second half as Westside had trouble maintaining its form. Jan Komarcia took advantage of a late defensive switch and scored a breakaway with 60 minutes of play, his second of the game. The last 10 minutes the Westside defense, already thin when Zenick Inthalaksa left the game due to injury, ran out of gas. Brent Stabeno took advantage of their disarray and scored the final goal of the match.

Match Report: Thirsty Lion 6-1 Westside
What should have been an exciting match-up, unfortunately was over early. This was a tale of opposites, as Thirsty was firing on all cylinders while Westside was trying to figure out how to start their motor. Westside has given up early goals to top teams all season, but have been able to mitigate the damage for most games. This game was done with twenty-five minutes left on the clock. Thirsty applied pressure early and often. Their attack caught Westside's defense off guard for 3 easy goals in the first half. Then, coming out of the break, Westside looked like they might make it a match, winning and scoring on a penalty kick. But, this served to fire-up the Thirsty crew. They shot-down any hope of a coming back with three surgical goals that left Westside hoping for an early ending to the game.
Interesting developments
Now that we are halfway into the season, perhaps the daily/weekly grind is taking its toll. When you account for injuries, other commitments, and illnesses, many of the clubs may wish they had reinforcements. Also, yellow and red cards may be whittling team numbers down, making substitutions more and more difficult. As it stands, we have a tiny surprise in that DNA Futbol Club seems to have clawed its way into playoff position, ahead of the more established Westside club. Whether or not there will be changes in the standings, or if DNA FC can stay in its place will be one of the interesting storylines to watch in the coming weeks.
