O30 Week Five Recap

JH Kelly 4, IPS/Blitz 5

Defense was not a highlight for either team, but clinical finishing left the keepers grasping for air many times through an interesting game. JH Kelly jumped out to an early lead and then took the foot off the gas and lost concentration. IPS gained control of the midfield and cruised to a 4-1 lead. At some point momentum swung back around and JH Kelly came back to be within 1 goal. A breakaway injury time the produced a save from IPS that literally gave them the 3 points ended an entertaining momentum shifting match.

Westside Lompoc 2, Kell's FC Portland 5
The WL strategy was simple -- hunker and counter. Five minutes into the game, it looked like it might work. A quick outlet through the middle and to the deceptively speedy Todd Grunewald peeling away and hauling balls down the right flank opened up the weak side, where outside left midfielder Matt Anderson positioned himself perfectly in a withdrawn position to cleanly strike the hard-driven cross by Grunewald, which was brilliantly dummied by the tightly-marked Mike Dorrington. 1-0 Westside Lompoc. Of course the game was young, and WL knew a poised Kell\'s side would mount a considerable attack. Sure enough, within the next ten minutes they got it back, 1-1. Grunewald was subbed for Niall Gregor, the offensive threat in the throes of a fitness reclamation project. Signalling his intentions, Gregor quickly collected the ball near the corner of the penalty box and spun a couple defenders before rifleing a shot just wide of the upper V. Moments later, he\'s fed, route 1, by the Carrick-like Dorrington at the top of the box, turned, and drilled a laser underneath the diving Kell\'s keeper. 2-1. The center official whistled the shortened half to an end, and both sides spend their two minutes assessing their second-half strategies. Kell\'s predictably comes out firing on all cylinders, circulating bodies through the midfield at a dizzying pace, forcing multiple pronounced rebuffs by Lompoc enforcer Chet Zimmer. Kell\'s magic hat proves too deep, again, as they pull two more rabbits out over the span of ten minutes. With 12 minutes remaining, WL shifts the formation to a more offensive one, but are unable to get the needed equalizer, and instead get exposed on the thinned-out defensive end by a hungry Kell\'s attack eager to put the game firmly out of reach.
