2010 - Fall Campagin Begins

Finally, the start of the Fall 2010 season is upon us. Many exciting games lay before us as teams, new and old, polish their boots to in preparation for their first match.

Week one opens Friday night with powerhouse IPS, fresh off it's Kennedy Cup finals victory, tangling with the ever dangerous, Kells Swoosh. Both will be eager to get a jump on the other in the race for points.

Meanwhile, one pitch over at the PCC Rock Creek Campus, the Adidas Thirsty Lions will attempt to devour the Westside Metros. Will Garrick's crew will have other plans making the 7:35pm kick offs a great place to be.

This weekend also debuts our two new and exciting U18 teams. The Westside Metro's and Oswego Southside. DNA will be Westside U18's first lesson with class commencing at 4pm on Delta Park's Strasser Field. Southside will play opening day host to the Light of Africa at 4pm on Sunday at Tigard High School.

These games will mark the 3rd season that U18 teams have entered into league play in the OPSL. The past two youth teams each went on to have significant success at the national level thus suggesting their overall games were improved with their participation in the league. We are proud to be able to build on this foundation.

But while much is made of youth, what of wisdom? Can you say 030? Oh boy!
Sunday the 12th is packed with battle tested titans eager to regain glory of days gone by. First up is the last season's new comers Olympians who will face semi-finalist, West Metros. Next up is JH Kelly versus St Pat's Tourney champs, Black Cats. Last but most notably, Kells FC will face the venerable Red Army at 6pm at Liberty HS.

Kells has been the dominate team in the over 30's division for the past few seasons. This is no fluke as the have just reeled off an impressive string of victories including the NW's Cascadia Cup and a finalist appearance in the national championship. Congratulations from the entire OPSL. You made us proud!

Finally, some changes in the soccer world have caused a few delays in the confirming of the schedules. We hope to have this resolved very soon. Please check the site weekly to confirm your game times and dates and Have Fun!

The 2010 Kennedy Cup Tournament Is a Wrap!

A long, hot weekend of high level adult amateur soccer at the Tualatin Hills Recreation Center has come to a close.  The 2010 Kennedy Cup Tournament was a major success, with three trophies in as many divisions being raised at the end of today's games.

Kennedy Cup - In the men's open division final, IPS/Marathon Taverna found the only goal of the game when Chris Skaggs scored on a diving header with less than five minutes to play.  The stalwart, disciplined Vancouver Thunderbirds marched back down the field and rung the crossbar with a blistering shot, but could not find the equalizer against the resident soccer maniacs from Portland.  The Kennedy Cup will stay in Oregon for at least a year, the first time since 2003.  In the third place game, Kells FC Swoosh convincingly put away Yakima United.

The McAdams Cup, the open women's division, was a round robin between three teams, Kells, Escape from New York (both Oregon teams), and the Whitecaps Prospects from the PCSL.  On Thursday night, Kells dispatched Escape from New York, but were turned back by the Whitecaps Prospects on Saturday by a score of 2-0.  On Sunday, the Whitecaps Prospects put on a clinical display in their showdown with Escape from New York, leaving no doubt about their claim to the McAdams Cup trophy.

Finally, in the inaugural Cascadia 30s Cup, Kells FC put away Kelly's Olympians in the final, 4-1.  Red Army defeated the Capitol Hill Rowdies 6-3 in the third place game.

We would like to offer special thanks to Soccerplex, Kells Irish Restaurant and Jason McMillen, University of Western States Chiropractic College and Chris Zander, Special Olympics of Oregon and Mark Hanken, Pacific Office Automation and Mark Fulk, Janet Irigoyen and the officials and assessors, Tamara Grigsby, Scott Rice, Greg Freuler, Ernesto Aguilar, Evan Baechler, Patrick Tumpane, and Phil Coates.

We would also like to thank WSSA and the Pacific Coast Soccer League for their partnership and help in conducting the tournament.  The members of the PCSL Board are sentinels shepherding the legacy of this long-running tournament, and one that the OPSL is proud to be a part of.  On behalf of the OPSL, we look forward to coming years of excellence of the Kennedy Cup Tournament.

The Kennedy Cup, an annual regional tournament between the best teams from the Pacific Coast Soccer League (B.C.), Washington State, and the OPSL, returns to the State of Oregon for the first time since 2003, when FC Swoosh won it.  As the name should indicate, the Kennedy Cup has an impressive legacy (scroll down for more on the history of the cup).   The tournament will take place at the Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation Center on Saturday, August 14 and Sunday, August 15.

In addition to the Kennedy Cup, which is for open men's team, this year will not only see thekevin-mcadams-cup-s return of the Kevin McAdams Memorial Cup (scroll down for more on the history of the cup) for open women's teams (the first time since 2005), but also the advent of the Cascadia 30s Cup, for men's teams over 30 or 35 years of age (depending upon which organization is hosting the cup).

In each cup tournament format, four teams qualify.  Two teams are from the host organization, and one each from the guests.  On Saturday, the host teams each play one of the guest teams.  On Sunday, two teams play for the championship and two play for third place.
